Who are you and what do you do?

I'm Corinna Anderson, a local ceramic artist making mostly functional wheel-thrown pottery with colorful surface designs.

How did you get started?

I began in 2014 taking classes as a hobby, fell in love with clay and gradually surrendered all other career goals to this nourishing, inspiring art medium.

A friend invited me to try a First Friday wheel "taster" class at the Visual Arts Center in Richmond, and I instantly got the bug! I still have this pottery piece today as a reminder of my progress.

Who is your art for?

My art is firstly for myself as a form of physical meditation, creative expression and intellectual challenge. Working with clay connects my head and hands, calms me and fills me with joy. I hope people who touch anything I make can feel that!  I am happiest when I know my pieces are being used and enjoyed.

What’s inspiring you right now?

I am always renewed by seasonal changes in the natural world around me, and I'm constantly working on my drawings to capture more of that beauty in my surface designs and imagery. I also recently took an inspiring sculpture class at Clayground Studios with Debbie Quick and am excited to practice more figural work over the next year.

What’s one thing you’re most looking forward to this year?

At this point I'm frankly overly-excited about the 58th National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) conference, Coalescence, being held right here in Richmond, March 20-23!  I'm also on a team organizing the Richmond Clay Windows Event, showcasing local ceramicists and our cool neighborhood small businesses! Richmond is such a special city and it warms my heart to think of this collaborative creative event glowing in windows all over town!
